Columbus is a big wuss -- but when you're afraid of being eaten by zombies, fear can keep you alive. Tallahassee is an AK-toting, zombie-slaying' bad ass whose single determination is to get the last Twinkie on earth. As they join forces with Wichita and Little Rock, who have also found unique ways to survive the zombie mayhem, they will have to determine which is worse: relying on each other or succumbing to the zombies. Genre
The sub-genre of this film is based on zombies, the trailer show that zombies run a lot faster than normal as zombies where first portrayed as slow with not a lot of strength and energy. Zombie land uses a lot of irony and acts in a clever way. This trailer has its own style as it is also a comedy as well as a horror, from the trailer you can tell the genre of the film is horror and the sub-genre is zombies. This is clearly shown in the trailer as you can tell from the non-verbal communication of some of the characters that they was acting and dressed in a certain zombie like way which special effects makeup and a lot of blood and gore. The costumes on the zombies where also tatty and old with many rips which could suggest they have been involved in vicious attacks. The props used from the main characters that are fighting against the zombies for survival suggest to us that guns and baseball bats are needed for them to protect their selves as these strong dangerous weapons are what are needed to defeat these strong powerful zombies.
Narrative
The narrative of the story is told and presented in a non-linear order. Meaning not everything’s told as a story you can see that there has been clips put in from all over the trailer also leaves the audience on edge as we don’t find out what happens at the end of the film. This makes the audience want to go and see the film to find out what actually happens.
Location
The trailer tells us that the location of the trailer is based in the suburb areas, based in America, you can tell this from the characters accents in the trailer and the scenery around the areas being filmed. During the trailer most of the shots are actually shown driving in the car, while on the motorway, this suggests to us that they are on a mission to get away somewhere without the trailer even having to tell us.
Characters
The characters in the film come together as a family, there is Columbus who comes across as the geeky teenage boy, Tallahassee as the farther figure, Wichita as the girl who everyone fancies and Little Rock who comes across as the girl that needs to be protected as she is young. Woody Harrelson who plays Tallahassee has also starred in some other sci fi films. The setting of the film is similar to other zombie films as they are mostly set in suburb areas. Jesse eisenberg who plays Columbus
Voice over
A voice over was used to emphasise the story of the events being taken place in the trailer as at the beginning the character Columbus spoke to the audience while shots were being shown of the events that was going on in the film. However he did not speak for a long period of time.
Theme
In zombieland the trailer shows a teenage geeky boy going against the stereotype and fighting zombies, you would typically only see a teenage geeky boy playing them sort of things on a game console, not in real life, this shows us that he is strong and just as good as any other boy and can defeat zombies. All zombies are the same whereas the main characters are different to everyone. Zombie Land’s theme was a very simple one, but not poorly illustrated. Columbus' inner monologue really helps us understand and capture this need for connection, for people, and despite his differences with Tallahassee, they slowly begin to enjoy each other's company. It's believable. With the women starting off as enemies and then letting them ride with them, suddenly, they very suddenly become friendly and it's a little more forced.
Pacing
The pacing of the trailer changes throughout. At the beginning of the trailer the pacing was very fast however towards the middle it started to slow down and then speed up towards the end again.
On screen graphics/captions
The first caption that is showed is the welcome to zombie land; it is bold and is in a large size text so that it stands out. It is in yellow writing as yellow stands out; it also shows us the title of the film so we recognise it as well as introducing us to the film
Editing and post production
During the making of zombie land the producer and director decided to use special effects makeup as part as their post-production, the makeup is relevant to the film as the zombies needed to look very gory and stand out as zombies. Very few actual special effects was used however a green screen was used.
